Which type of iPad screen is yours?
How the screen is built is the biggest single factor in an iPad screen price:
- Separate glass and display: the standard iPad. A cracked front with a working picture usually needs only new glass and touch layer.
- Laminated display: every iPad Pro, plus the iPad Air and iPad mini from the Air 2 and mini 4 onwards. Glass and display are one part, so a crack means a full display assembly.
You don't need to work this out. Pick your model when you book and the price shown is for your iPad. If you're not sure which model you have, the A-number printed on the back identifies it.
Damaged glass or damaged display?
Signs the display underneath is damaged, not just the glass:
- black or coloured blotches spreading from where it was hit
- lines across the picture, or an area that stays dark
- a backlight that flickers or has become uneven
Signs of a touch fault rather than a picture fault: a strip where taps do nothing, the iPad opening apps by itself, or Pencil strokes breaking up in one area. On a standard iPad a touch fault is a glass repair; on a laminated iPad it's the full assembly.
Until it's repaired
Cracked iPad glass sheds tiny splinters, and children use iPads more than anyone. Put clear tape over the cracks, keep it in a case, and avoid pressing on the damaged area, which can spread the crack into the display below. Keep it away from water, too: a cracked screen no longer seals.
Once it's fixed, a case with a raised lip around the screen does more to prevent the next crack than a screen protector, because most iPad screens break from a knock on a corner rather than a face-down fall.
After you book
We arrange the collection and check the iPad before it's opened, including the frame, the home button and Touch ID where your model has them. Will my Apple Pencil work with the new screen?
It should. We test touch and Pencil input across the whole screen before the iPad goes back. If your Pencil was already misbehaving, mention it when you book so it isn't blamed on the repair.
The glass is cracked but the picture is fine. Why not replace just the glass?
On every iPad Pro, and on recent iPad Air and iPad mini models, the glass and display are laminated into one part, so new glass means a new display too. On the standard iPad they're separate, and a glass-only repair is usually possible.
How long does an iPad screen repair take?
Longer than a phone screen. The adhesive around the glass has to be released slowly, and the new glass needs time to bond before the iPad is tested. The estimated repair time for your model appears in the price table and while you book.
Can you repair an iPad with a bent frame?
We check the frame at diagnosis. A bent chassis stops a new screen from sitting flat, so it has to be straightened first or the new glass will crack again. If it can't be, we tell you.
