MacBook covers a lot of different machines. A 2015 13-inch Air, a 2019 16-inch Pro and an M-series Air share a name and very few parts. Displays, batteries, keyboards and ports change from one generation to the next, and so do the price and the repair time.

On every Apple Silicon MacBook, and on Intel models with a T2 security chip, the storage is soldered to the logic board and encrypted to it. That matters before you book for two reasons. Your data can't be rescued by moving a drive to another machine, so if the board has died, recovery becomes board-level work with no certain outcome. And some parts, Touch ID among them, are paired to the board, so a repair that was a straight swap on an older Mac may not be one now.

We tell you which of these applies to your Mac at diagnosis. If a repair can't be done properly on your model, we say so rather than attempt it.

Two faults make up a large share of the MacBooks we see. Butterfly keyboards, fitted from 2016 to 2019, fail in a familiar pattern: a key repeats, sticks or stops working, usually once dust gets under the mechanism. On those models the keyboard is riveted into the top case, so the proper fix replaces the whole assembly rather than a single key.

The second is a swollen battery. If the trackpad clicks strangely, the Mac rocks on a desk or the lid won't close flush, stop using it and unplug it. A swollen lithium battery is a fire and injury risk, not a cosmetic issue. Drop it in or book a collection and we handle it with the care it needs.

We see more fan and overheating complaints than the design alone would explain. Fine dust is drawn in, packs against the heatsink fins, and the Mac slows itself down to stay cool. Owners describe a slow Mac; the cause is mechanical. A thorough clean and fresh thermal paste often bring performance back, and that is worth trying before anyone mentions a board repair or a new laptop.

Most MacBook repairs, including screens, batteries, keyboards and ports, leave your data alone. Even so, take a Time Machine or iCloud backup first if you can, because no repair is risk-free and a recent backup costs you nothing.

If it won't turn on, don't let that stop you. Mention it when you book, and protecting what is on the drive becomes part of the diagnosis rather than a problem you have to solve first.
