The first hour after the spill
What you do in the first hour shapes the outcome more than anything we do later. Step by step:
- Switch it off completely. Not sleep mode, off. Liquid damage is mostly electrical: current running through a wet board is what destroys components, and a device left switched on in a bag is still doing that.
- Don't charge it or plug anything in. This is how most recoverable devices become unrecoverable.
- For a laptop, unplug it and leave the power button alone. If the battery comes out easily, take it out.
- Dry the outside and hold it tilted, ports facing down. Let gravity drain what it can.
- No hairdryer, no oven. Heat pushes moisture deeper and loosens adhesive and screen layers.
- Don't shake it. That spreads liquid onto parts it hasn't reached yet.
- Book it in the same day if you can. After seawater, pool water or a sugary drink, treat it as urgent.
And skip the rice. The FAQ below explains why that advice costs people their devices.
Why a wet device that still works isn't safe yet
Liquid damage happens in two stages. The first is the short circuit at the moment of contact, which the device either survives or doesn't. The second is corrosion, which starts as soon as liquid reaches the board and keeps going for weeks, eating through the tiny connections between components long after the outside is dry.
That delay is why so many devices work perfectly for two weeks and then die, and why they are far harder to save than one brought in still wet. By then the damage has spread from where the liquid landed to everywhere it flowed. A device cleaned before the corrosion spreads is a different repair from the same device a month on.
It is also why a water-resistance rating is no reason to relax. Those ratings are measured on new devices in clean water; seals age, drops loosen them, and no rating covers seawater, pool water or anything with sugar in it.
How we treat liquid damage
We open the device, disconnect the battery first, and examine the board under a microscope for the liquid indicators, the trail of corrosion and any shorted components. The board is then cleaned, ultrasonically where needed, dried properly rather than left to air-dry, and tested one stage at a time.
The cleaning is where most of the value lies. It is slow, unglamorous work, but it is what stops the damage spreading and what tells us whether anything else is worth attempting. If a component has been destroyed, replacing it at board level is a separate decision we raise with you once we know what we are dealing with.
What we can and can't tell you upfront
We publish no price and no success rate for this repair, because neither can be known before your device is opened, and a figure quoted just to win the booking would be one we couldn't stand behind. The diagnosis is free, and if the board isn't worth repairing, you hear that early and plainly.
If the repair goes ahead, its warranty is shown before you confirm, and the warranty policy sets out what it covers. Collection and return are free either way, even when the answer is that the device can't be saved, and you can follow each stage on repair tracking.
Questions before you book
Price, collection, your data, parts and warranty, answered plainly.
My phone got wet but still works. Should I do anything?
Yes. This is the situation people most often get wrong. Surviving the moment doesn't mean the device is safe: the real damage is corrosion, which starts once liquid reaches the board and carries on for days or weeks after everything seems fine. Devices brought in while still working have the best outcomes. Devices brought in weeks later, after they've died, are the hardest to save.
Should I put it in rice?
No. Rice soaks up a little moisture from the air and none of the liquid inside a sealed device, does nothing about corrosion, which is the actual damage, and leaves starch dust in the ports. It has a reputation because devices sometimes recover on their own and the rice gets the credit. Switching the device off and having it opened and cleaned is what changes the outcome.
Can you promise it will be fixed?
No, and no honest repairer will. Liquid damage is the one repair where nobody can know the outcome before the device is opened and cleaned. What we do promise is a free diagnosis, a plain account of what we find, and an early, straight answer if the board isn't worth repairing, rather than charging you to find out slowly.
What about my photos and files?
Tell us when you book if your data matters more than the device, because it changes how we approach the repair. Sometimes a board can be brought back just long enough to copy the data off, even when the device itself isn't worth fixing. Data recovery is separate work, quoted separately once we've seen the state of the storage.
Is an older device worth repairing?
Not always, and when that's our view, we'll say so. Liquid repair takes a lot of labour, so on an older phone the cost can approach what the device is worth. The assessment and the price cost you nothing, and the decision stays with you.
Is seawater or pool water worse?
Yes, and it's more urgent. Salt water and chlorinated water conduct electricity far better than tap water and corrode much faster, and sugary drinks leave a residue that keeps conducting once dry. If it was any of these, treat it as a same-day emergency: hours matter far more than they do with clean water.
General questions about booking, collection and warranty are answered in the repair FAQ.
